Mission Style Blanket Chest with 2 Drawers

A blanket chest is a low rectangular shaped box used for storage. This particular chest is generally manufactured with a bottom, four sides and a top that lifts up to access the interior. The blanket chest has been used in America since Colonial times and was found in virtually every Colonial home. The chest was used to store blankets and bedding not being used and doubled as a bench for sitting. A blanket chest in later years was used to hold a bride’s trousseau and went with her after her marriage when she setup housekeeping herself. This chest commonly became known as a hope chest. Blanket chests today are often made with drawers instead of a lift top. This very old and simple piece of furniture is still useful for storage and extra seating, many times placed at the end of the bed.
