Furniture Hardware Specs

Furniture hardware, specifically pulls and knobs, while varying greatly in style and size, do have some common specifications throughout the industry. A furniture pull is generally defined as a handle to hold onto while opening a drawer or door. A pull may or may not have a back plate attached to it and most often is attached with two fasteners or screws. A knob is similar to a pull but is attached using only one fastener and is usually a solid, round or somewhat rounded, shaped body to hold when opening a door or drawer. Many knobs and pulls used on furniture are also installed on kitchen or bathroom cabinet drawers or doors. Most, but not all, furniture pulls used on kitchen and bath cabinetry measure 3 inches from center to center or 3″ c/c. This measurement refers to the distance between the shafts of the pulls where the screws attach, measured from the center of one shaft to the center of the other shaft. If you are replacing current hardware with new hardware, it is important to have this measurement when purchasing new pulls if you want to use the same holes as the old hardware. Virtually all furniture hardware is made to attach to the doors or drawers using an 8-32 machine screw. A machine screw is a fastener type that has threads to be driven in or screwed into a complementary tapped insert, in this case, the shaft of the pull or knob.  The number 8 refers to the size of the screw, which is a standard in the hardware industry. The number 32 refers to the number of threads on the shaft of the screw in an inch. Changing out the hardware on kitchen or bathroom cabinet doors is an easy way to upgrade and change the look of the room. Any new hardware you purchase will come with the fasteners you need to install the new hardware. This is a simple and easy home improvement project!
