Buffalo Chicken Wings

There may be some confusion or discussion as to the exact day of their birth, but Buffalo Wings celebrate their 46th birthday this month! While some of the details of that fateful evening have been lost, Teressa Bellissimo, the owner of the Anchor Bar in Buffalo, New York came up with the idea of serving a treat to the establishment’s patrons. She took chicken wings that would ordinarily be used for stock, cut them into bite size pieces and deep-fried them. After cooking, she bathed the chicken wings in hot sauce and grabbed some celery sticks and blue cheese dressing to serve with the wings. The chicken wings were such a huge hit, Teressa began serving them on a daily basis. From such a humble beginning, we have a food known everywhere in the country. This finger food mainstay is especially synonymous with the Super Bowl. Perhaps this has to do with the Buffalo Bills and their 4 consecutive Super Bowl appearances with the focus on all things Buffalo in the early 1990’s? As we cheer for our favorite team in the World Series or settle back to watch a favorite college or professional football game, raise a wing, a celery spear dripping with blue cheese dressing and say a hardy ‘Thank you, Teressa’ and ‘Happy Birthday” to that most delicious treat!
