With Thanksgiving/Black Friday/Cyber Monday just passed, we roll right into the most stressful time of the year. “Tis’ the Season to be Jolly”, followed by “fa la la la la la la la la”. Really? Isn’t it funny that this season happens every year and we are still surprised on why it is so stressful? The only way we can get to the jolly part is to prepare for it. Here are four essential tips:
1. Awareness – Be aware that the holidays are far from a time to relax. It is the most stressful time of the year with families getting together, food preparations, presents to buy, shopping, decorations, holiday parties, etc. Awareness is key.
2. Get Organized – Mark your calendars and make sure your significant other, close families and friends are all on the same page so you don’t double book. Get things done ahead of time so that you can actually enjoy the holidays. Be careful not to burnout and don’t’ forget to schedule time to rest.
3. Family – This is a good time to set aside your differences and let things go as long as it isn’t harming or hurting anyone. You need to pick your battles very carefully especially when family, friends, and company get togethers are gonna be back to back. I find it easier to just focus on ‘FUN’. Fun is contagious.
4. Finally Finance – Start your holiday month with a budget. Know up front what you are going to spend on EVERYTHING i.e. presents, parties, food, transportation, hotels, decorations, etc. There is nothing worse than running out of funds one week before the holiday celebrations with only half of the presents purchased. Maybe focus on quality gifts and not quantity.
